Autopsia, made part of the MFA thesis in Printmaking. This artist book is comprised of a series of poems written by Vanessa Nieto Romero as a reflection about the materiality of paper as a receiver of marks and as a metaphor for
skin and memory. The metaphor is also present in the process of papermaking (an act of healing by transforming memories into new surfaces) and the process of etching (the dual nature of acid as both a creator of matrix and a weapon).
In this body of work I explore dichotomies such as fragility and strength; presence and absence; corrosiveness and healing; revealing and covering; latent and active; lightness and heaviness; translucency and opaqueness; resolved and in flux, as I continue understand my own emotional relationship to the work and invite others to listen.
The book compiles 72 pages, with texts transferred into handmade paper from raw cotton extracted from a mattress and Kozo fiber.
This artist book is unique, it was bound by Cesar Faustino and printed by the artist in May of 2017 in Providence, Rhode Island.
