Ex-Botox
This project meets an installation of etchings inspired by antique holy cards. Reinterpreting traditional catholic prayers and iconography, each piece worships the various cosmetic procedures and beauty regimes revered in Colombian society. Besides the original etchings, viewers encounter an installation of digitally printed copies on which they can write a petition or gratitude regarding their personal beauty needs. As the central part of the exhibition, and referencing the traditional catholic custom, viewers then hang their prayers within the installation. Faithful to my current inquiry into expanding the possibilities of printmaking through installation projects, I undertook the concept of votive images, as a social exercise where the public could leave a testament of their thoughts regarding personal aesthetic enhancement, and in turn the prayers themselves become material for the exhibition. The prayers have been written anonymously by the public and I collected them as a tool for understanding the perceptions and reactions about beauty in Colombia.
